Before shape, colour or settings, the most important thing about a toy is what it is made of. A toy spends time against some of the most sensitive skin on your body, so the material needs to be safe, stable and easy to keep clean.
What “body-safe” really means
Two things matter. First, the material should be free from harmful additives such as phthalates (chemicals sometimes used to make cheap plastics soft). Second, and just as important, it should be non-porous: a smooth surface with no microscopic gaps where bacteria can settle. Non-porous materials can be cleaned thoroughly; porous ones cannot be fully sanitised, no matter how hard you scrub.
Silicone
The most popular material for good reason: soft, flexible, warm to the touch, durable and non-porous. Quality silicone carries vibration well and lasts for years. Use a water-based lubricant, as silicone-based lube can gradually damage the surface of silicone toys.
ABS plastic
A hard, smooth, non-porous plastic often used for vibrator bodies, bullets and lipstick-style toys. Easy to clean and compatible with any lubricant.
Stainless steel
Used for plugs and wands. Non-porous, very durable and easy to clean, and it can be warmed or cooled in water for temperature play. Works with any lubricant.
TPE and “soft skin” materials
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is common in strokers and realistic sleeves because it is very soft and stretchy. It is generally considered safe when free of phthalates, but it is porous. That does not make it bad, it means it needs a little more care:
- Wash after every use with warm water and mild soap or toy cleaner.
- Let it air dry completely before storing; trapped moisture is the main problem.
- Use a condom over it if you share it with a partner.
- Store it on its own; TPE can react with silicone if they touch.
- Replace it when it starts to look worn or sticky.
Red flags when shopping
- Vague labels like “jelly”, “rubber” or “silicone blend”.
- A strong chemical smell straight out of the packaging.
- An oily or tacky feel on a new toy.
